Math Initiative Program Overview

The non-profit MIND Research Institute has developed the Math Initiatives Program to engage local education agencies and funders to help teachers elevate math achievement in area schools. Local corporations are funding the partnership to meet their ongoing needs for employees at all levels of business, along with community foundations and philanthropists. The collaborative community projects implement MIND’s ST Math® education program in area schools via an application process. In addition to receiving MIND’s award-winning ST Math instructional software, participating schools also receive professional development trainings, software updates, real time reports on student progress for teachers and principals, and an assigned MIND support representative who proactively supports school implementation throughout the year.

Miami-Dade Math Initiative

The Miami-Dade Math Initiative is a community partnership between MIND Research Institute and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Through the partnership, MIND is bringing ST Math to 50 low-performing Miami-Dade Schools, impacting more than 15,000 students and 800 teachers. The Miami-Dade Math Initiative represents a 5 year commitment of $2.5M.

According to national assessments, over 65% of 4th graders in Miami-Dade are not proficient in mathematics. This lack of proficiency continues to increase through secondary school, and 50% of students enrolled in college are required to take remedial mathematics. Without a foundation in mathematics, many students will not be able to succeed in an increasingly innovation-driven workforce.

New York City Math Initiative

The New York City Math Initiative is a community partnership among the New York City Department of Education, participating corporations and foundations and the MIND Research Institute to help teachers elevate student math achievement. It is specifically designed to impact 100 participating elementary schools in New York City Public Schools that are performing in the bottom 30% in math on state standardized tests. A five-year effort, the Initiative was launched in June 2010.

In New York City Public Schools, an alarming number of youth lack the skills and aptitude to be successful later on in life. Just 40% of 4th grade students in NYC scored "Proficient" or higher on state standardized math tests; math scores fall to 34% Proficient for 8th graders. Low-income and minority students, in particular, experience low performance, scoring significantly lower in math than their peers. As 44% of NYC students are low-income and 40% are African-American or Hispanic, this achievement gap is of great concern.

Orlando Math Initiative

The Orlando Math Initiative is a community partnership among Orange County Public Schools, corporations, foundations and the MIND Research Institute to help teachers elevate student math achievement. It is specifically designed to impact 50 participating elementary schools in Orange County Public Schools that are performing in the bottom 30% in math on state standardized tests.

In 2011, the Orlando Math Initiative resulted in a 4.0 percentile point increase in math proficiency among students participating in their first year of ST Math, as compared to -0.2 decrease in percentile points in comparable non-ST Math schools.
